What will the Little Tokyo Recreation Center provide?

  • A multi-purpose, multi-generational community center.
  • Major space for basketball, volleyball, and martial arts practices, games, and tournaments.
  • Space for theater and writing workshops, taiko, odori dancing, a senior nutrition program, and other community activities/events.
  • It will provide the youth, seniors and adults with a safe, secure area for recreation.

Why in Little Tokyo?

  • Little Tokyo and the surrounding neighborhood needs a safe recreational facility
  • It would help to revitalize the community and the economy.

Who will use it?

  • Japanese Americans, due to their strong, historic ties to Little Tokyo.
  • The multi-ethnic, multi-generational community that lives and works in the area.
  • There are plans for joint programs with other inner-city youth centers.

Where will it be built?

  • Next to the new Little Tokyo Library and the historic St. Vibiana cathedral, and Los Angeles St. and 2nd St.

Is there public support?

  • Over 1,000 individuals have signed letters of support.

  • Organizations, including the Southern California Women’s Athletic Union (SCWAU), the Intercollegiate Nikkei Council (INC), the West LA United Methodist Church, the Pacific Southwest District of the JACL, the Institute for Buddhist Studies (IBS), the Community Youth Council (CYC), and Nikkei for Civil Rights & Redress (NCRR) have given their support.

How much will it cost?

  • The total cost is estimated at $20 million.
  • We have already raised $0.75 million in state and other grants, along with some private support, unusually strong support for a project without a secured site.
