Expanding Little Tokyo's Boundaries...

The City is working with LTSC to provide a site for the Rec Center near the St. Vibiana's Cathedral. The Cathedral sits at 2nd St. and Main St., near the New Otani Hotel. The City is in the process of acquiring land south of the Cathedral to build Police facilities, City parking, and the Recreation Center. The value of the land to be used for the Rec Center and City parking is estimated to be over $10 Million. It is through the leadership of the City Council and Mayor that this community project will finally find a site. Current plans put the Recreation Center along Los Angeles Street between 2nd and 3rd streets, just south of the new Little Tokyo Library, and north of the Rafu Shimpo building.

St. Vibiana's
The St. Vibiana's Cathedral was the historic home of the Roman Catholic Archidiocese of Los Angeles. After the church was severely damaged by the Northridge earthquake in 1994, the Archdiocese began looking for a new home, and ultimately constructed the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on nearby Temple St, completed in 2002. The St. Vibiana Cathedral is a National Historic Landmark.

Little Tokyo Library
In 2005, the Little Tokyo Branch Library opened its doors to the public. Decades of work by the Friends of the Little Tokyo Library finally paid off as the Library finally found a permanent home. The Little Tokyo Library started off as a bookmobile offering Japanese language texts, and had other temporary locations in Little Tokyo before 2005. Little Tokyo now has an opportunity to expand its boundaries to include the Library and the future Recreation Center, to be located just south of the Library along Los Angeles St.
